One thing that i have enjoyed from doing the Tumblr. posts in this class is that i finally got to learn a little bit about tumblr. I never knew that it was as big as it is, and in some ways gives users more abilities to facilitate thoughts and ideas than other social media sites like facebook or twitter. Social networking and social media have really taken on a life of their own over the past ten years and it will be very interesting to see what the next ten years has in store for us.
This article not only talked about the fact that The Avengers has surpassed previous box office records for opening weekend, it also claimed that part of the success of the film was based on the advertising it has been getting since 2008. The author reminds us that the first hint that there would be an avengers movie was in 2008 in Iron Man. This is a pretty good strategy. It lead to almost four years of anticipation that paid off big time for the studio.
I think that this was a genius plan that they had. Shooting little blurbs here and there that led to a huge payday, and one of the best super hero movies of all time.
Anticipation has definitely been building for me since i had seen the final hulk movie. The producers of these movies really designed a master in order to release these action hero movies over the past 5 or so years in order to keep anticipation up for The Avengers. I never doubted that this plan would lead to box office gold. We will see if they try a similar strategy to this in the future with other film series.
Dark Shadows is a new vampire movie starring Johnny Depp that comes out May 11th. I wrote my final paper on vampire film iconography, and I am anxious to see what Dark Shadows has to offer. The previews make it seem like the usual vampire iconography, but anything is possible with…
Tim Burton has such a unique style that really makes him stand out in the world of major hollywood productions. It is amazing how he can make dark movies that are funny and entertaining all wrapped up into one. He is definitely able to stretch his films over several genres which has to be challenging to accomplish.

This is the Canadian version of sportscenter, shown on the canadian channel tsn. This is just one example of an american network reaching out to expand to other countries.
One section in the globalization chapter discussed if America should allow our film and television to be offered in foreign markets. The debate centered around our media possibly offending other cultures, but would that stop the corporate executives from letting this happen and making money off of…
I think that it is only a matter of time before our media starts leaking into other countries, in fact when you think about it, it already has. ESPN has branched out with their channel ESPN Deportes that is broadcast in spanish, and they are also affiliated with the sports network TSN in Canada. I think this will continue to be the trend as we move forward.

The media can poke fun at different stereotypes, one of them being homosexuality. This scene from Seinfeld shows how Jerry and George were mistaken for being gay.
This is a term I often use when I describe myself.
It is an interesting term, basically stating that since actor x is in film y, film y will make more money than I could imagine. One actor that comes to mind is Brad Pitt. He’s done some great work, it’s pretty much a guarantee that I would see a film that he stars in no questions asked.

Another actor that falls into this category in Leonardo de Caprio. I will see any movie that he is in and I’m especially excited to see him as Jay Gatsby towards the end of the year when the Great Gatsby comes out. I think i have enjoyed all the leonardo movies i have seen with the exception of J. Edgar.
One of my favorite actors is Will Ferrel, his star image is pretty much nutty. It is weird to see him in films like ‘Stranger than Fiction’ or ‘Everything Must Go’ since they are so much different than the silly films he normally does.

Jim Carey also plays in a wide spectrum of movies. He has the pure comedy movies like Dumb and Dumber, but he also plays in movies that have much darker messages like Eternal Sunshine on a Spotless Mind. His ability to play a variety of roles just proves how talented he is as an actor.

Advertising and Masculinity
Two companies that sell the same product more or less, Ax and Old Spice, have very different ways of advertising their products in relation to masculinity. Old Spice shows guys in their commercial that are very muscular and tough, trying to get men to use their product that way. Ax takes a different approach. They use very ordinary looking guys in their ads but after using the Ax product are irresistable to women. Two different approaches for trying to do the same thing, marketing the product.
Chapter 21 asks what kinds of masculinity the media offers. I think it is obvious, as the textbook states, that the media image of male masculinity today is one of a strong, powerful, and muscular male. Masculinity can also be viewed by a person’s wardrobe, meaning the nicer, more expensive…
I think it is interesting to see how the views on masculinity have changed over the last 50 years. Back then a lot of products were marketed at fathers, as a by product of the baby boom area. Today you would be hard pressed to find any products meant for dads.
